This trend is different from the expressionism and
abstract expressionism movements, which stressed such

emotionalism.

TURNING
POINTS: 20TH CENTURY
BRITISH SCULPTURE
25 February –16
April 2004
more
information... |
This
exhibition focuses on sculpture produced in
Britain during the 20th century. Why
sculpture? Because more than any other artform
of the period, sculpture in Britain took
extraordinary leaps and bounds into new
territories. Almost every artist represented
here shook off the achievements of his or her
predecessors in an effort to find new ways of
making objects that would be true to his or
her own time and temperament. There is no
resting on laurels. There is a sustained
search, from the beginning of the century to
its end, to find the language, the materials,
the form, the volume, the sensations and the
colour in which to express the way each
generation feels about itself and the society
from which it springs.

Richter:
“I was surprised by photography which we all
use so massively everyday. Suddenly I saw it
in a new way as a picture that offered me a
new view, free of all the conventional
criteria I had always associated with art …
for the first time there was nothing to it. It
was pure picture. That’s why I wanted to have
it, to show it-not to use it as a means to
painting but use painting as a means to
photography.”

Pioneers of Iranian Modern Art
Mohsen Vasiri
8 May – 2 Jul 2004
... more Informatoin |
Half a century of Mohsen Vaziri's art
production confirms his strong credence in the
modernist tradition. In fact, his journey,
from the earliest figuration practices to the
last abstract collages, beholds diversity of
ideas and modern art pioneers' methods; and
for that reason, his works may look assorted.
Vaziri has realised ultimate values of the
modernist tradition in abstract art, and
through the language of pure form and colour,
he believes one may express profound
conceptions, which would be improbable in
naturalistic representations. To acquire such
expressions, intuitive and intellectual
courses are reasonably practicable. Creating
an abstract work, in Kandinsky's words,
"Reason, consciousness, and purpose play an
overwhelming part. But of calculation nothing
appears: only feeling" |

Gardens of Iran
Ancient Wisdom, New Vision
13 Sep - 3 Nov 2004
...more information |
The Persian Garden
is the earthly manifestation of the
paradigmatic image of paradise which exists in
the “Imaginal World” and has always been in
the archetypal memories of the Iranian people.
As Arthur Upham Pope said: “Every Iranian has
a garden in a corner of his mind.” The mystic
relation with which Iranians nurture water,
trees and flowers, clearly shows that the
Persian garden is a sacred realm. The charisma
of the Persian garden is deeply rooted in
Iran’s most ancient past and dates back to the
beginning of agriculture and irrigation. The
Persian garden is the elaborate product of a
creative people living in a hostile
environment, devising a poetic realm for
sacred rituals and royal ceremonies. It is
also a magnificent expression of the idea that
water could be drawn from the innermost layers
of the feverish desert earth, running
underground for long stretches to emerge from
a fountain in the middle of a garden

A cursory glance at the history of art
reveals the social, political and economic
conditions have always played a major role
in the emergence of new artistic currents
and styles. The French and Russian social
upheavals paved the ground for Realism and
Constructivism to come into being. Dadaism
and Expressionism were the offshoots of
tensions experienced by Western art and the
culture of other countries, including Iran,
in the wake of World Wars I and II. In Iran
The social and political developments oh the
1940s radically altered the evolution of
this country’s plastic arts and the
subsequent growth of Western influence on
its soil eventually disrupted the internal
cohesion of Iranian painting, entirely
altering its natural path.

How can photography, as a graphic medium
that reflects whatever it captures and records
the passing moments of life, reveal the meaning
and substance of an object in an artistic way?
This is a major concern for those who consider
photography an art. Ever since photography was
invented, there has been a controversial gap
between photography as a reflection of concrete
realities around us and photography as a
creative innovation. Many years of observation
and invention - with the use of photography
equipments - have enabled photographers of
various disciplines to gain such a huge
experience and skill that makes them more
reliant on their own creativity and aesthetic
vision rather than equipments and techniques.
Hence, the question of invention and artistic
creation is a subject of contemplation in
different categories of photography.

Printmaking has assumed greater significance
in the field of visual arts today, not least
because the artwork can be reproduced in
large numbers and the perception of
contemporary ambiance of the pictures has
become easier. A look at history of
printmaking in Iran and the world indicates
a tendency among artist to reproduce an
experiment with printmaking during their
artistic careers. The history of printmaking
in the Far East dates back to more than a
thousand years. Engraving dates as far back
in history as 1466 AD, while modern
serigraphy (silk-screen) has been practiced
since 1907 and lithography was invented in
1781 AD.
